1. REVERSING ROUND A CORNERWhen you take up the starting position just past the side road, don't stop too close to the kerb. If you are too close you will not have room to manoeuvre. The examiner will first make you stop before the side road, and explain what manoeuvre you are about to do, so you can achieve this. Practice this manoeuvre until you can do it quite quickly. Don't keep stopping unless to continue would inconvenience someone. Try to keep all-round observation as you move, and look where you are going! Don't use the mirrors alone unless you are physically unable to look round. So long as you keep reasonably close to the kerb and don't end up on it or near the centre of the road, you will probably be okay.
2. REVERSE PARKINGThis is also known as parallel parking. You will asked to pull up in a fairly large gap between two vehicles and told to move off and stop alongside the vehicle ahead, then reverse back to the kerbside. Make sure that you stop with a good gap between you and the parked vehicle. When reversing, move slowly, and from the beginning turn the wheel so as to go towards the nearside kerb. As your front clears the parked vehicle, start steering so as to finish correctly. You are allowed to go back and forth a little bit to correct your position. Don't ask about this, just do it, as if you were on your own. Again, so long as you finish reasonably close to the kerb, and you are not still in the centre of the road, you will ba alright. 3. EMERGENCY STOPWhen you get the signal, AND NOT BEFORE, just do a rapid, controlled stop, wherever you are. No need to look in mirrors, the examiner has looked round to see if it is safe, which is why you MUST wait for the signal. Keep both hands on the wheel until you have stopped. Then you can put the handbrake on if you want, or if you think it is needed to control the vehicle, like on a slight hill. The examiner will, however, without delay, ask you to drive on when you are ready. After all, you are probably in the middle of the road! Do not stand on the brakes, or try to lock the wheels. If your vehicle has the Automatic Braking System (ABS), the wheels will not lock anyway. Ultra rapid reactions are not what is being looked for, just a controlled rapid stop, done without delay. Good Luck and safe driving!
